Trying to keep the heat inside your home and the cold air outside is a constant struggle every homeowner has. One of the biggest ways that cold air escapes is through windows. Luckily, you can use window treatments to minimize the heat loss, which means you don’t have to buy all new windows.
- Blinds - Blinds can offer great insulation. The blinds trap any heat coming in from the sun where it is held between the blinds and windows to create a barrier that keeps cold air out. You might want to choose darker colored blinds or blinds made to absorb the sun’s rays. White can repel the sunlight and work against your goals.
- Curtains - It’s a good idea to choose thicker, insulated curtains for the wintertime. These can be closed to block out drafts. You may want to open them on particularly sunny days to allow the sunlight in, but they should be closed once the sun goes down or if it is a windy day in order to get the maximum effect from them.
- Shades - There are some shades on the market that are made specifically to insulate. They can work as well as curtains to keep the heat in your home and the cold outside. These are called cellular shades.
Keeping your home warm in the winter shouldn’t be a struggle. Losing heat through the windows is simply a waste of money. Do your best to keep the warm air in and cold air out by choosing the right window treatments. Call American Classic Shutters Inc. for more information on our shutter choices.
